Leaving Home

16th AUGUST, 1999

We're off at long last. As you read this, we are well on the way to Durban, South Africa enjoying the comforts of Winter Wave. Oh, you didn't know that cargo ships had comforts? Swimming Pool, Gym, Cinema.... all for the bargain price of a couple of cheap flights to South Africa. I know which way I'd rather travel.

It is reasonably unusual for passengers to travel on cargo ships, however it is possible.

Peter Marshall, author of 'Around Africa' first gave us the idea. His aim had been to travel around the continent by sea aboard any vessel he could find.

As we didn't like the thought of 'Truck' spending 16 days at sea without us and going through customs alone, one of our sponsors, Gibbons Freight Ltd, put us in touch with the shipping line who said they had a spare cabin and agreed to take us. For more information on Shipping click here.

At last, time to relax for a little while. Time to soak up the sun, salt and spray. Time to read about where the hell we're going!!

We're due to arrive in Durban sometime beginning September. We'll update once we've orientated ourselves and christened our wetsuits a few times.
